How to Promote Your Music on Instagram: Reels, Stories and Ads
Streaming services are where people listen. Instagram is where they get to know you. For many independent artists, Instagram is the place a casual listener turns into a real fan. This guide covers how to promote your music on Instagram using Reels, Stories, collaborations and official ads, without fake followers.
Get your profile ready
New visitors decide in seconds whether to follow. Before you promote anything, check that your profile does its job:
- Switch to a professional (creator) account so you can see insights and run promotions.
- Write a clear bio. Say what kind of music you make and where you're from.
- Add links to your latest release, streaming profiles and website.
- Pin your best posts, ideally your newest release and a strong performance clip.
Make your music available on Instagram
Most distributors can deliver your songs to Instagram and Facebook's music library. Once your track is there, you and your fans can add it to Reels and Stories, and every use shows your song name and links back to its audio page. It's one of the easiest ways to let your music spread beyond your own followers.
Use Reels for discovery
Reels are shown to people who don't follow you yet, which makes them the best format for reaching new listeners. Ideas that work well for musicians:
- Performing the hook of your song live or acoustic
- Showing how a beat or part was made in the studio
- The story behind a lyric
- Reacting to fans using your sound
- Short clips from your music video
Hook viewers in the first second, keep the music front and centre, and post regularly. One Reel rarely makes a release; a series of them often does.
Use Stories to keep fans close
Stories are for the people who already follow you. Use the music sticker to share your song, add a link sticker to your release, and use polls and question boxes to start conversations. Save your best Stories as Highlights, for example "New music", "Tour" and "Studio", so new followers can catch up.
Collaborate with other creators
Collab posts let you publish a Reel or post jointly with another account, so it appears to both audiences. Work with artists in your genre, producers, dancers or creators whose followers match your sound. A good collaboration introduces you to an audience that already trusts the person you're working with.
Boost your best posts with official ads
When a Reel performs well with your own followers, it's a good sign it will work with new people too. Boosting it through Instagram's official ad tools puts it in front of users chosen by location and interests. The followers and engagement you gain come from real people, so they show up in your insights and are much more likely to listen to your next release.
Avoid fake followers
Buying followers or likes might make a profile look bigger for a week, but it hurts in the long run. Fake accounts don't engage, which lowers your engagement rate, and Instagram regularly removes inauthentic activity. Promoters and labels can usually spot it, too. Growth that lasts comes from real people choosing to follow you.
Measure what works
Check your insights after each release. Which Reels brought new followers? Which posts led to link clicks? Do more of what works, and adjust the rest. If you're also deciding where to focus your budget, our comparison of Instagram vs TikTok promotion can help.
