Spotify Pre-Save Campaigns: How to Get More Day-One Streams
A pre-save lets fans add your song to their Spotify library before it's out. On release day it appears in their library automatically, and those first-day plays and saves show Spotify that real people want your music. Here's how to set up a pre-save campaign and actually get fans to use it.
What is a pre-save?
A pre-save is the streaming version of a pre-order. Fans click a link, log in with Spotify (or another service like Apple Music or Deezer) and give permission to save your release when it comes out. Many pre-save tools can also make the fan follow your artist profile, which helps your future songs reach their Release Radar.
Why pre-saves matter
- Day-one activity: saves and plays from real fans as soon as the song drops.
- More followers: followers get your new music in Release Radar.
- Fan data: some tools let you collect email addresses (with consent) for future releases.
- A reason to post: a pre-save gives you weeks of content before release day.
Be realistic: a pre-save doesn't guarantee playlist placement. It's one useful signal among many, and it works best together with good pitching and promotion.
3 ways to create a pre-save link
1. Spotify Countdown Pages
Spotify's own pre-release pages, set up in Spotify for Artists for eligible upcoming releases. Fans can pre-save inside the Spotify app, watch your Clips and see a countdown. Check in your dashboard whether your release qualifies. New to the dashboard? Read our Spotify for Artists guide.
2. Your distributor's pre-save page
Many distributors include a free smart link with pre-save, such as DistroKid's HyperFollow. It's the easiest option if you're just starting out.
3. Smart-link tools
Tools like Feature.fm, Linkfire, Hypeddit and ToneDen create pre-save pages that work across several streaming services. Many include email capture, analytics and ad tracking pixels.
How to set up a pre-save campaign, step by step
- Deliver your release early. Submit it to your distributor at least 3–4 weeks before release day so the pre-save link can be created. See how to upload your music to Spotify.
- Create the link with one of the options above, using your cover art and a short message.
- Pitch the song to Spotify's editors at the same time, at least 7 days before release. See our playlist pitching guide.
- Put the link everywhere: link in bio, email list, YouTube descriptions and pinned posts.
- Plan your countdown content (see the plan below).
- Track results: total pre-saves, the click-to-pre-save rate and which channels worked best.
A 3-week pre-save promotion plan
3 weeks before release: announce
- Reveal the title, cover art and release date.
- Share a 10–15 second hook clip on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts with your pre-save link.
- Email your fans.
2 weeks before: build interest
- Post behind-the-scenes content: writing, recording and the story behind the lyrics.
- Test different snippets of the song to see which part people react to most.
- Run small, targeted ads to fans of similar artists, sending them to your pre-save page.
Final week: push
- Post daily reminders and countdown stories.
- Thank fans who pre-saved and reshare their posts.
- Get your release-day posts and Spotify Canvas ready.
Release day and after
- Switch every link from "pre-save" to "listen now".
- Thank your pre-savers by email.
- Keep promoting for at least 2–4 weeks. Most songs need repeated exposure before they stick. Use our music release checklist.
Tips to get more pre-saves
- Give a reason: an exclusive snippet, early access or a personal thank-you.
- Keep the page simple: one clear button.
- Explain it: many fans have never pre-saved. "Tap to have the song in your library on Friday" works better than "Pre-save now".
- Lead with your best hook in every clip.
- Never buy pre-saves. Fake accounts don't listen, and artificial activity can hurt your release. Learn how to spot fake music promotion.
Frequently asked questions
How many pre-saves is good?
There's no magic number. Compare each campaign with your previous releases and your follower count. The percentage of link clicks that turn into pre-saves is often more useful than the total.
Do pre-saves help with the Spotify algorithm?
Pre-saves lead to early saves and plays from real fans, which are positive signals. Spotify doesn't publish exactly how its recommendations weigh them, so treat pre-saves as one part of a wider launch plan.
When should I start a pre-save campaign?
Ideally 2–4 weeks before release. Shorter can work if you already have engaged fans; much longer can lose momentum.
Are pre-save tools safe for fans?
Reputable tools use the streaming service's official login and ask fans for permission. Fans can remove that access at any time in their account settings.
Promote your pre-save and release to real fans
Audience Plan runs official ad campaigns on Spotify, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube to reach listeners who already like your genre. No bots, no passwords. See our plans.
